Revitalise Your Love for Fitness: Two Ways

Sometimes, we get caught up with so much work that we forgot to look after ourselves. Before we know it, we have fallen off the fitness train and are struggling to get back on it. Fret not, this story shares two ways we can fall in love with fitness again so that we can live happily and healthily every day.

“The clock is ticking. Are you becoming the person you want to be?”

Greg Plitt

“I have not exercised in ages,” you tell yourself.

Do not fret – many people also tell themselves the exact same thing. I have been obsessed with fitness, and there were times when I felt lazy to even roll out the fitness mat. Building the self-discipline to build a weekly fitness routine and adhering to it took a while, but I eventually jumped right back into it.

I am sure many twentysomethings have gone through similar experiences. A couple of my friends are so obsessed with their careers that they totally neglected their health. Having a stable career is something everyone should strive for. However, I believe one does not have to make a trade-off between health and career – I believe that everyone can have both.

Loving yourself by keeping yourself in good shape should be one of your priorities (if not, a top priority because health is wealth). For this reason, incorporating a fitness routine into your daily life is vital.

Fitness should neither be viewed as a punishment nor a chore. Changing into your athletic clothing should excite you because that is when you know you about to make yourself happier, stronger, and healthier. The time has come for you to do yourself a long-term favour.

Here, I am sharing two ways to reignite your love for fitness and how your body, health, mind and overall well-being benefit from it.

1. Participate In Group Fitness Classes

Looking for that one gym or studio that meets your fitness criteria is a good starting point. Below are several reasons why hunting for that “one” will help you regain your sense of love for fitness:

  • You make new connections with like-minded fitness junkies, making it easier to stay committed to your goals.
  • You will forever be engulfed by positive vibes about exercising your butt off.
  • You will soon discover that one fitness niche that you genuinely enjoy.

“Fitness niche? What does that mean?”

“All progress takes place outside the comfort zone.”

Michael John Bobak

Think of it as having a particular profession in a broad career category. For example, in the world of engineering, your field of expertise lies in software engineering. Hence, software engineering is your engineering niche. If you want to reap terrific results from the workout and soak yourself in a pool of positive energy daily, finding your niche is important.

When you are signing up for a group fitness class, there are a couple of things to be aware of:

  • The monthly cost. Is it a good value for money? Will you use it enough to make good of the price?
  • Do they provide you with a one-time opportunity to participate in the group fitness class for free before actually committing to regular attendance?
  • Do you see yourself coming here at least 3-5 times weekly?

I had to take a while before determining what my fitness niche was. The answer came in the form of running, bodyweight strength workouts and swimming. As you can see, I have more than one fitness niche. I discovered that having a variety of fitness niche helps keep me balanced and active.

The best part about having more than one fitness niche is that you can spread them out throughout your week. Having cardio exercises such as running and swimming helps build your endurance, while bodyweight strength workouts help develop those muscles.

There is a gym located just then minutes away from where I live that has all sorts of fitness gears and facilities (including a swimming pool), which is perfect for rotating workouts throughout the week. When you have identified your fitness niche(s), your love for fitness should slowly but surely return to life.

2. Spice Things Up By Trying A New Workout Method

Simply participating in a group fitness class does not signify that you have fallen in love with fitness. It could just mean you are attempting to change things up by trying a new fitness exercise.

“What hurts today makes you stronger tomorrow.”

Jay Cutler

Perhaps you were into dodgeball for a while, and then, you do not know precisely when, lost interest. You have probably done dumbbell-assisted strength exercises at the gym before, but there are times when you are motivated enough to even pack a gym bag.

Your exercise routine should not have just jumping jacks alone. In order to achieve better results, it is a good idea to have a variety of workouts that engages as many parts of your body as possible. Therefore, it is crucial to have different workouts on different days of the week so that you can keep going without overworking your entire body.

Not sure how that works, let alone get started, allow me to elaborate further:

  • By isolating and targeting specific muscle groups, strength training can help you build them. For instance, by doing regular push-ups, you are targeting your efforts solely on your pecs. Increased muscle mass also enables your body to burn off more fat throughout the day.
  • Cardio elevates your heart rate as it pumps more oxygen to muscle groups that are being engaged. Increased heart rate during cardio has so many health benefits, ranging from boosting your immune system to strengthening your heart and from reducing blood pressure to enhancing your sleep quality.

Final 2¢: How Does it End?

Loving fitness again is not to just keep wearing your favourite pair of skinny jeans. One of the most underestimated elements of fitness is your overall well-being. Your well-being consists of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Your well-being should be your only priority because without it, how can you expect to make any day meaningful?

Given the variety of fitness niches and a seemingly infinite number of exercises available for you to try out, you can choose what you want to do and how you do it. For instance, if keeping lean is your goal, you will begin by doing some bodyweight training before bringing in the weights. If you want to be as flexible as a contortionist, yoga and pilates are your go-to workouts. If your number one objective is to lose weight, look out for cardio and strength-building exercises that you enjoy.

Even a quick 20-minute workout helps. Not only are you reaping the benefits daily, but you are absorbing positive energy that improves your mood and makes enjoying life easier. The best way of keeping yourself fit is to remain cheerful and healthy. Now that you have come this far, how are you going to resurrect your love for fitness?
